A return and refund checklist

Keep a careful record of a return or refund request.

Before you submit

1. Read the merchant's current return and refund policy. Keep the order confirmation and purchase receipt separately.
2. Capture only ordinary details you may need later, such as the merchant, product label, order date, stated refund amount or method, visible deadline, and selected return reason.
3. Remove passwords, full account, payment-card or bank numbers, identity documents, private correspondence, sensitive purchase details, and anything else that should not be stored.
4. Save the local record, then return to the merchant and submit the request yourself.

After submission

Attach the merchant's own confirmation page, reference, or official status when available. The merchant's record remains authoritative. Keep any carrier drop-off receipt and return tracking separately, and check the merchant's official return or refund status.

Know the limit: a local SubmitSentry record is not proof that the merchant received or accepted a request, approved a return, received the returned item, issued a refund or payment, or that you have a legal entitlement. SubmitSentry does not initiate or submit return requests, monitor shipments or refunds, contact merchants or payment providers, file a dispute or chargeback, guarantee an outcome, or provide legal advice.

The FTC recommends checking the seller's policy and keeping purchase records and communications. Rules, deadlines, and rights vary by payment method and location; use official guidance when needed.
